Captain Brian Michael “Booj” Bourgeois was a warrior, leader, teammate, and devoted family man whose life embodied the very best of the Naval Special Warfare community and the values of service to our nation.
Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Brian grew up with a deep love for the outdoors and a strong sense of duty. An athlete and competitor, he played football and baseball in high school before earning an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. There, he continued to excel both on and off the field, graduating in 2001 and commissioning as an officer in the United States Navy.
After completing the demanding training required to become a Navy SEAL, Brian served for more than two decades in the Naval Special Warfare community. Throughout his career he deployed around the world in support of America’s most challenging special operations missions during the Global War on Terror. He was widely respected not only for his tactical skill, but for the way he led—with humility, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the men beside him.
Brian ultimately rose to command one of the Navy’s elite units as the Commanding Officer of SEAL Team Eight. His service was recognized with numerous decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” for valor and the Combat Action Ribbon—honors reflecting both his courage in combat and his dedication to the mission and his teammates.
On December 7, 2021, Brian passed away at the age of 43 after sustaining injuries during a training exercise in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Even in training, Navy SEALs push the limits to prepare for the missions they may be called upon to perform in defense of our country. Brian died doing what he had always done—leading from the front and preparing his team for the challenges ahead.
In recognition of his extraordinary leadership and service, the Secretary of the Navy posthumously promoted him to the rank of Captain.
But beyond the impressive resume and the medals earned in service to our nation, Brian was remembered most for the kind of man he was: a loyal friend, a devoted husband and father, and the type of leader who inspired everyone around him to be better. Those who served with him describe him as a quiet professional—tough, capable, and deeply committed to the people he led.
As part of the 2026 Operation One Voice Honor Ride, we proudly honor Captain Brian “BooJ” Bourgeois and the sacrifices he made for our country.
Participants in the 2026 Spin For Special Ops (SFSO) ride will see his tribute featured on the sleeve of this year’s commemorative cycling jersey—honoring the warriors and families Operation One Voice proudly serves.
We ride in his honor.
